The 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays. I love that it comes during the summer when it’s warm and that it involves barbecuing and fireworks. There is no obligation to see crazy relatives or buy gifts. You literally just throw some meat on the grill, invite over some friends, drink and sit around and chat until it’s time for a sparkly light show.
Speaking of drinking, I always like to have some form of pitcher drink at our barbecues for non beer drinkers to enjoy. White wine sangria is always a winner for hot summer days and that’s what I’m making this year to celebrate the birth of our nation.
We spent part of our honeymoon in Barcelona and Lisbon drinking sangria at pretty much every opportunity. Lisbon in particular had some amazing fruity white wine sangria. This recipe is based on my memory of a particular spot we happened upon at random. Europeans do outdoor dining so well and I remember sitting outside on those amazing tile sidewalks drinking a pitcher and wondering why life couldn’t always be like this. So while I can’t quite completely recreate this experience, the taste of this sangria does bring back fond memories of our Iberian peninsula adventures.
