I made a commitment to myself and my little one to breastfeed for his first year. We’re 4.5 months into that commitment and truth be told, I’ve found it’s not the easiest thing in the world. The initial month was spent just trying to figure out how to nurse, leaving me with raw and painful nipples and him in tears. Then came pumping with all the complicated parts and weird contraptions, including a pumping bra that looks like some bizarre alien costume. I’m not complaining about this though. It provided me with one blessed nighttime feed my husband could take on and allowed me to catch a few extra hours sleep.
The next big step for me, however, was breastfeeding in public. I was terrified of the prospect. I imagined flashing an entire restaurant accidentally or some Puritanical stranger chastising me. Fortunately none of those things have happened to me yet and fingers crossed they never will. However, I have found that nursing clothing really does make public breastfeeding considerably easier. While you certainly could get away with never buying a single article of nursing specific wear, I truly think it makes the commitment to breastfeeding infinitely easier.
The good news is that nursing clothing is so much cuter than it used to be and in fact you may keep wearing your clothing well beyond weaning your little one. This makes the investment seem much more worthwhile. In order to make your shopping experience a little easier, I’m sharing my lengthy research of the best websites to buy nursing wear, because really who has time to go shopping at a physical store with a newborn? Ideally you would buy at least a few nursing shirts prior to having your baby so you’re prepared with something to wear when people visit and you want to be a little more modest. The good news is that a lot of maternity shirts also double as nursing shirts and I would definitely always pick these over just maternity clothing every time.
So here is my shortlist of the best nursing clothing online. Hope it helps in the difficult but rewarding journey of breastfeeding!
- Best Overall Nursing Clothing: Motherhood Maternity
I particularly love the Jessica Simpson line of nursing wear. The clip down nursing cami is the most useful piece of nursing clothing I own. Buy 5 of them, seriously! They also have tons of other cute shirts and dresses. Also everything I’ve ordered from here seems to be very good quality and is holding up well to repeated washings. Tip: do not, I repeat do not ever buy anything full price on this website. They have sales constantly, along with clearance. You are wasting your money if you pay full price. Another bonus, you can return items for free at their storefronts.
- Best Budget Friendly Nursing Wear: Old Navy
You will not find cheaper nursing clothing than Old Navy. The quality is not the best, but if you’re on a budget, this is the place to buy. A bonus, most of the options are pretty cute and they are always running sales on top of the already cheap prices.
- Best Nursing Dresses:Roolee
I discovered this site after doing some research of nursing clothing that is actually fashion forward. The dresses are so cute and also very figure flattering particularly for those first 3 months postpartum when you don’t want to wear anything formfitting. This store is pricier, but is a great site for buying one or two items that you really love.
- Best New Kid on the Block: Latched Mama
This is a fairly new company that is producing some great nursing wear in innovative styles. This site is best for casual everyday nursing clothing that is also figure flattering postpartum. The prices are also very reasonable and you get free shipping for orders over $75.
- Best for Basics: H&M
I love to shop at H&M normally anyway, but discovered they’re also a great place to buy reasonably priced basic nursing tank tops, bras and dresses.
- Best for Splurging: Harper & Bay
While you won’t get any deals on this website, you will find very fashionable nursing clothing in unusual designs, patterns and shapes. The best thing about this clothing line is that no one will suspect it’s for nursing.
- Best for Transitional Wear: PinkBlush
Looking for maternity clothing that will transition into nursing? Look no further than PinkBlush. All their nursing clothing can also be worn while you’re expecting. This will save you time and money.
