My journey switching to non-toxic, EWG verified beauty products continues! This week I’m doing a product review of SheaMoisture African Black Soap Body Wash. Check out my previous post on why I’m making the switch and my review of Avalon Organics Clarifying Shampoo.
First a little background on my normal body wash routine. I have used Dove Sensitive Skin Body Wash for years now, thinking I was using a safe product due to the word “sensitive” in the title. I have come to find out from the EWG Skin Deep Cosmetics Database, that this is NOT the case. EWG rates beauty products from 0-10 with 10 being nuclear waste level toxic for your body and 0 being the safest of products. Dove Sensitive Skin Body Wash rates a 5/10 due to ingredients that can cause everything from cancer to neurotoxicity.
Needless to say, I decided I was not okay with continuing to use a product that could slowly be killing me. Hence, my journey begins at finding am EWG approved alternative. I’m looking for body wash that is rated a 2/10 or lower.
A little about my skin: I have oily, sensitive skin that is prone to breakouts on my back and chest. I need a body wash that does not cause breakouts, but also doesn’t dry my skin out.
After hours of online research, I settled on SheaMoisture African Black Soap Body Wash as my first foray into non-toxic body soaps. Why? It promised to calm skin and prevent breakouts. The product information on EWG is confusing because if you search for Shea Moisture with a space the rating is 1/10 and if you search SheaMoisture with no space, the rating is a 3/10. I’ve researched this on several other websites and the consensus seems to be that the 1/10 rating is accurate. This does illustrate some issues with EWG though.
Now onto the review!
- Nice texture and feel to the soap
- Leaves skin feeling clean, yet moisturized
- Nice scent, although a little stronger than anticipated
- Rinses off easily
- A little goes a long way
- I still am having some back and chest acne issues. In the product’s defense, I’ve only been using it a week. I’ll update once I’ve used the entire bottle.
- 13 ounces will cost you about $9.00 on Amazon. In comparison, Dove Sensitive Skin Body Wash can currently be purchased for around $9.00 for 34 ounces.
That’s it for cons! I do really like this product so far, but time will tell if it actually helps with acne. I promise, I’ll post an update once I’m through the 13 ounce bottle, which I anticipate will take about a month.
