What to include on your baby registry

We are now almost 6 months into parenthood and our little one is getting to be so much fun. He is sitting up and rolling over (I sound like I’m talking about a dog don’t I?). He generously bestows smiles on the population at large and we are getting a little more sleep to boot!

I still have moments where I look at him and wonder where he came from. It seems so surreal that we made him and that we’re allowed/expected to keep him alive and ensure he is a decent, compassionate human being. While parenthood produces moments of the most intense joy and love you could imagine, it also has led to a lot of doubts and fears for me. Am I doing this right? Is he sleeping enough, eating enough, developing normally? And of course the thought: Oh dear God, what am I going to do when we have to discipline him?

All that to say, parenting is hard enough without not having what you need when you need it. Nobody wants to have to run to Target at 10pm to buy a bassinet because your newborn hates the Pack-n-Play that you were sure would be perfect for sleeping in your room (this totally happened to us). This is why I’ve composed the list below of baby items we could not live without. My hope is that our mistakes will help you avoid at least some of those late night runs to Target. In addition maybe it will get you a little more precious time with your baby and sleep!

What to Include on your Baby Registry: Top Ten Must Haves

  • Graco Dream Suite Bassinet

This product really saved our lives in the first few months of parenthood. As I said above, our son hated  his Pack-n-Play and would not sleep. My husband ran and got this bassinet and it really was a game changer. First you have the bassinet that has a built in vibrator with two speeds. Then you flip the bassinet over and it becomes a changing table. This really made those late night and early morning wake-ups so much easier because we had everything at our fingertips with minimal disturbance to our baby.

  • VAVA Baby Night Light

This night light gets great reviews for a reason. Everything works by just the touch of your hand. You can dim it, change from white to yellow light and two taps of your hand turns the light off. It is easy to take on trips since it’s battery operated, but you can also keep it plugged in at home.

  • Skip Hop Moby Bath Smart Sling 3-Stage Bathtub

I really love this bathtub because of the removable newborn sling. While, it’s a little more expensive than some other brands, I’ve found this bathtub to be worth the price. At 6 months our little guy is still using the sling until he is steadier with sitting up and he loves it! The only drawback is that the tub is too big to fit in most sinks, but it fits great in the bathtub.

  • HapTim Multi-function Baby Diaper Bag Backpack

My husband and I love this diaper bag because it’s very gender neutral and hands free with the backpack straps. It also has tons of space, a travel changing pad and pockets so you aren’t constantly losing things. We have been super happy with this purchase.

  • Fisher-Price Healthy Care Deluxe Booster Seat

It’s almost time for our little one to start solids and we bought this high chair in anticipation. We are planning on doing baby led weaning, which is super messy. This chair is perfect for this because it’s all wipeable plastic. It includes a food tray with cover that is dishwasher safe. It also converts into a booster seat for a toddler and attaches to any chair. We’ve been using it everywhere we go and have yet to find a chair it won’t attach to! I also love that we don’t have to have a bulky separate highchair.

  • i play. Baby Flap Sun Protection Swim Hat

This sun hat actually stay on your baby’s head thanks to the adjustable chin strap and head circumference. The neck flap does a great job of protecting your baby’s entire head and neck area. The fabric is also very breathable with SPF 50 sun protection. This is a must have for the summer months.

  • Bright Starts Zippy Zoo Activity Gym

This is the toy that just keeps on giving. Our son has been using this since he was two months old and we wish we had gotten it sooner! It really does grow with your baby as I’ve witnessed our son continue to find new ways to entertain himself as he gets older. It promotes reaching, grabbing and rolling over to get at the hanging toys. Added bonus, it allows you to get some other things done while your baby entertains himself!

  • NoseFrida

So as disgusting as this may sound, you are going to wish you had this snotsucker if you don’t! It really does work. Don’t worry about snot shooting into your mouth. There is a filter just in case. There are so many things you think you’ll never do before you become a parent. Believe me, you will suck snot out of your baby’s nose despite your protests and you might as well use the best product for it!

  • Boon Lawn Countertop Drying Rack

When parents told me I had to have this product, I was initially skeptical. Why couldn’t I just use our normal drying rack? The answer? Because bottle and pumping parts are annoyingly small and you would lose them without this amazing invention. Seriously, we use this every single day.

  • Graco Pack ‘n Play On the Go Playard

Remember that Pack-n-Play I said our baby initially hated? Well he loves it now and it’s our saving grace on trips. While you may not get any use out of this when your baby is a newborn, you will get tons of use out of it after, so make sure you include on your registry!
